2 mins or less. A tiny thought or idea to help shift perspective and elevate your business and life ā that doubles as a powerful message you can share with your clients to help them reach their goals.
Ever had an unmistakable āgut feelingā about a person or situation, and ended up being spot on?
Or a rush of confidence when you stood tall and took up space?
Turns out, those moments arenāt just coincidencesā¦
Thatās āembodied cognitionā at work.
In the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, embodied cognition is defined as:
ā...The idea that the body or the bodyās interactions with the environment constitute or contribute to cognition in ways that require a new framework for its investigation.ā
š In plain english, that means our body and the way it interacts with the world around us plays a big role in how we think and understand things.
How this shows up in real life?
When weāre feeling confident, our posture changesā¦
We stand taller, we project a more powerful presence, we speak louder.
On the flip side, when weāre nervous or unsure, we tend to hunch over, speak quietly, or avoid eye contact.
But hereās where it gets even more interesting (and more useful!)...
This phenomenon goes beyond our body language.
Our physical sensations and actions can directly influence our decision-making abilities, our mood, our creativityā¦
Even our intuition. āØ
Ever notice how taking a walk or a hot shower can suddenly spark a ton of great ideas?
Or how taking a few deep breaths can clear your head?
Yeah, thatās embodied cognition at work.
This is especially helpful to know when youāre working with clientsā¦
It doesnāt matter if youāre a business coach, fitness coach, social media coach, or any other kind of coachā¦
Noticing subtle shifts in your clientsā posture, tone, or even their pacing can give you insights into their true feelings ā or even underlying challenges that they canāt articulate yet.
When you can tap into these cues, itās like having a āsecret weaponā that allows you to get to the heart of their issues faster and FAR more effectively.
(This can even help you in your personal relationships, too!)
So how can you immediately leverage embodied cognition?
š Schedule sales calls AFTER your workouts so you can shake off any nervousness
š During long workdays, take short breaks to breathe, go for a short walk, or even to just check your posture if youāve started to hunch over at the computer
š If youāre stuck on a decision, step outside ā a simple change in your environment can help your brain process information differently and lead you to an answer quicker
The magic of it all is that itās a TWO-WAY street. Just like our body influences our mind, our mind influences our body.
So the next time you're feeling stuck or overwhelmedā¦
Don't just think your way out of it ā MOVE your way out of it.
